Mazda released a software update and you have to replace two parts to get it working with carplay. I did the same thing on my 2016 Mazda CX-5. Reply It'll trickle down eventually. Currently only higher end cars like BMW have it. Just like back in 2014, only Lamborghini's had regular CarPlay when it first came out. Now almost all cars have it. I got the Mazda retrofit for my 2016 CX-5, and have been pretty happy with it - I was able to get it a bit closer to $300 than $400 - but still, not cheap. To my knowledge, this mostly involves replacement of the factory standard 800 mA usb hardware with a 2.1 Amp unit that meets CarPlay's requirements.
However starting with the Mazda 3 in 2014 they started putting in a more integrated system that is part of the car. It would be like taking out the mmi interface in a new audi. You just can't. It's part of the actual brain of the car. The good news is that by 2016 you will probably be able to buy a Mazda 6 with carplay from the factory.
